Ready to get started
Lady Dogs set to begin District 21-2A play against Corrigan-Camden tonight
After getting off to a rough start, the Lady Bulldogs are starting to click.
Ever since the Lady Dogs dropped a tough 69-68 loss to Pollok Central in a tournament at Tarkington on Nov. 19, they’ve been rolling, cruising to five straight victories.
As well as the Lady Dogs have been playing, there can’t be a much better time to start district play.
“Not to say that our tournament games and our nondistrict games don’t matter, but this is the part of the season that counts the most,” New Waverly head coach Eldridge McAdams said. “This is what those games help prepare you for. We won the first part of the season. Now we want to go out and win the second part.
“It all starts over for us.”
New Waverly (7-2) welcomes a taller Corrigan-Camden team tonight to Bulldog Gym to open District 21-2A play.
“There a little bigger than we are, but then again, a lot of teams are going to have that advantage against us,” McAdams said. “As far as speed goes, I don’t think there’s anybody who can match up with us. We just have to go with what has made us successful and that’s run and play defense.”
During New Waverly’s five-game winning streak, junior guard Kayla Williams and sophomore guard Myeisha Williams have been doing much of the heavy lifting.
Most recently, Myeisha Williams scored 27 points and Kayla Williams added six in the Lady Dogs’ 58-34 resounding win over Iola last week in their only game in the North Zulch tournament. In New Waverly’s last home game, Kayla Williams scored 39 points in a 57-40 win over Hearne on Dec. 1.
“The girls know that we rely on those two,” McAdams said. “Everybody has and knows their role. We’ve got a young team, but I’d like to see more out of the rest of the girls. It was nice to see Alex (Abbott) score in double digits the other night.”
Even with his team’s string of dominating victories, McAdams admits that there are still some areas that need fine-tuning.
“There’s still certain things that we need to work on,” the coach said. “One game it’s this and one game it’s that. We’ve just got to keep working hard to improve every part of our game.”
