It was a long and productive weekend for the Huntsville girls varsity basketball team. The Lady Hornets won four games in a row and captured the championship of the Lovelady holiday tournament.
On Friday, the Lady Hornets (5-3) beat Saltillo 61-41. Daquayla Terry scored nine points for HHS, while Dra James, Karla Kizzee and Myah Perry added eight points apiece.
Later Friday, Huntsville rolled past Cayuga 79-30. Breanna Fuller and Ceidra Coleman each scored 20 points; Ronisha Major added 14.
The Lady Hornets avenged an early season loss to Madisonville on Saturday, beating the Lady Mustangs 61-46 in the tournament semifinals.
Major scored 26 points and Coleman tossed in 17 more.
Huntsville edged a team from Australia in the championship game, 57-53. Major led the Lady Hornets with 16 points. Coleman added 14.
“The girls played extremely well the past two days,” Lady Hornets coach Jay Oliphant said. “Against Madisonville, we played a very good defensive ballgame.
“I think the girls are starting to figure out what I want. They’re starting to get it down.”
The Lady Hornets, who have only played one home game this season, go back on the road late this week. Huntsville plays at Kingwood on Friday. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
