Lady Dogs run past Grapeland

New Waverly jumps out to early lead, cruises to 64-47 victory

The Lady Dogs wasted no time once they tipped off against Grapeland on Monday.

New Waverly, No. 24 in the state, sprinted out to a big first-quarter lead and never looked back as the Lady Bulldogs pulled away with a 64-47 victory.

“We really came out right out of the bat,” New Waverly head coach Eldridge McAdams said. “It all started with the defense. We did real well defensively. We got plenty of turnovers and were able to turn those into quick layups.”

Myeisha Williams led all scorers with 24 points and also pulled down six rebounds. Kayla Williams chipped in 19 points and five rebounds. Post Jai Cleveland did well around the basket, scoring 14 points and grabbing eight boards.

Whitney McCullough added three points and four rebounds. Shelby Nunez and Victoria McCullough scored two points apiece.

With a sizeable deficit late in the game, Grapeland went on a spurt, but were unable to catch up to New Waverly“We tried to slow it down and that’s when they got back in it a little bit,” McAdams said. “When you have as big a lead as we did, you get kind of lackadaisical. That happens.”

New Waverly (4-2) returns to action tonight when it travels to Coldspring to face the Class 3A Lady Trojans.

“I know Coldspring will be quick,” McAdams added. “But we just have to keep on playing good defense. We’ll see how the girls respond to playing on back-to-back nights. Hopefully we’ll come out and get after it.”
