SHSU women down Grambling 67-59

Echols leads Kats with 20 points in win

Khamra Echols scored 20 points and Brittany Brooks added 18 to lead the Sam Houston women’s basketball team to a 67-59 nonconference victory over Grambling on Monday evening.

Whitney Smith added 12 points and led the Kats with nine rebounds as Sam Houston upped its season record to 2-2.

Jasher Blocker led the Tigers with 17 points as Grambling dropped to 1-2 for the year.

“Khamra had another great offensive game for us and Brittany played well, too, but give a lot of credit to our point guard Ray Alexander, who ran the floor so well and was simply tenacious on defense” SHSU head coach Brenda Nichols said.

Sam Houston led from start to finish, building a 36-19 lead at halftime.

“Before we started this trip through Louisiana, we challenged the girls to be stronger under the boards and rebound well,” Nichols said. “Tonight we got 23 rebounds from our post players alone.”

The Kats totaled 53 rebounds, including 25 offensive boards. Freshman Terra Austin pulled down eight rebounds, Alexander seven and Bre Agnew six.
