Top-ranked Bulldogs to begin season Tuesday

By Gene Schallenberg

As it turns out, the New Waverly boys basketball team, the preseason No. 1 team in the state, won’t have to wait until December to start its season.

On Tuesday, the Bulldogs will kick off their season when they host the Heritage Champions Chosen Ones.

“We’re all pretty excited,” New Waverly head coach Bill Goffney said. “We’re glad the season is finally here.”

Due to renovations at Bulldog Gym, the game, slated for 6 p.m., will be played at New Waverly Junior High.

When the Dogs tip off on Tuesday, they will also begin their campaign to advance to the state tournament, which will be held next March, for the third straight time.

But before entertaining those thoughts, Goffney is more interested in making sure he has the right lineup on the floor.

“We’re just trying to get all the pieces to fit together,” the coach said. “We’ve got a bunch of newcomers to our varsity team from the junior varsity this year. Right now, we’re mixing and matching the guys. We’re getting some new faces and we want to have guys that complement each other.”
