Hornets tune up for district meet

LaDay leads Huntsville boys to sixth-place finish; Beatriz Juarez wins medal for Huntsville girls team

Huntsville’s varsity cross country team tuned up for the most important meet of the season Saturday at a race in Huntsville hosted by the Sam Houston State Bearkats.

Following the final meet before the District 18-4A race on Oct. 30, Hornets coach Kathy Lehman was fired up about her teams’ performances.

The Huntsville boys finished sixth in the team standings, while Hornet senior Jeremy LaDay finished fourth in the individual standings. LaDay ran a 16:35 time in the boys’ 5-kilometer race that included teams from classes 5A and 4A.

Also running for the Huntsville boys were Sheardon Grant, Cody Castillo, Sal Gomeaux, Martin Juarez, Keegan Smith and Adrian Juarez.

On the girls’ side, Huntsville’s Beatriz Juarez earned a medal by finishing 20th in the 2-mile race that included runners from 5A and 4A schools. Juarez finished in a time of 13:12, while teammate Jimmie Vrummet turned in a time of 13:43 and Sarah Hebert ran a 14:45.

“We had a good meet today,” Lehman said. “We should be ready for district. We’ll start tapering off. Next week, we’ll just start maintaining our conditioning and we’ll give our legs a rest so that we’re ready for district.”

The district meet has been rescheduled for Oct. 30 at Misty Meadows Girl Scout Camp in Willis. Originally, the meet was going to be held Oct. 29 at the same place.
