Hornet tennis teams struggle with Oak Ridge

HUNTSVILLE — Gearing up for district play, the Huntsville tennis team faced Oak Ridge on Friday to open the season.

Huntsville lost to Oak Ridge 12-5, but picked up four victories in boys singles and one win in boys doubles.

Kyle Thompson and Stan Smith were victorious in two sets in No. 1 doubles 7-6, 7-5.

Winning in boys singles were Thompson in the No. 1 match (6-3, 6-4), Nathan Inmon at No. 3 (7-6, 0-6, 9-5), Smith in No. 5 (6-4, 6-2) and Matt Brown at the No. 8 position (6-2).

In the other boys doubles match, Cody Oliphant and Inmon fell 6-0, 6-2.

Also in action in boys singles was Oliphant, who lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2, Mason Braly, falling 8-2 in the No. 4 match. Chandler Livingston lost in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 and Quinn Christy came up short 8-2.

The Lady Hornets were shut out on Friday.

The girls doubles teams of Sarah Fry with Lexie Prier and Gracie Garcia with Sheriden Lowery each lost in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.

In girls singles, Fry, Alina Mahmood and Prier were unable to win a set in their matches.

In mixed doubles, Mahmood and Braly fell 6-3, 6-1.

The Huntsville tennis teams open district action today when they travel to take on Humble.

“It’s going to be an interesting year not only being in a new district, but also with new schools with first-year athletic programs,” John Fuller said.

“We graduated several varsity boys this past year in addition to graduating most of the varsity girls the previous year. We’re playing with a young team and hope to improve each week as the season progresses.”
