Bulldogs dismantle Somerville in baseball 17-3

Matt Roberts led a 17-hit offensive attack for New Waverly with a 4-for-4 performance as the Bulldogs blasted Somerville 17-3 in District 26-2A action Friday at Bulldog Field.

After crushing Hearne 19-1 on Wednesday, the Bulldogs combined to outscore their last two district opponents 37-4.

Rhett Bohannon was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a double and two runs batted in.

Matt Gray had two hits, including a triple, and three RBI while Eli Amador drove in a pair of runs with his two singles.

Micah Bohannon singled twice and brought home two runs while Zach Bowen’s fourth-inning solo home run over the left field wall was just one of nine runs scored by the Bulldogs that inning.

Ryan Reyes also added a two-run triple.

“I thought our hitting was great from top to bottom,” NW coach Tommy Bohannon said. “Hitting can be contagious. A lot of kids came through as we did a much better job at the plate tonight than Wednesday.”

Bowen pitched four innings to notch the win, allowing three hits and striking out four.

The Bulldogs (3-0 in district) will travel to Hempstead Tuesday at 7 p.m. and host Lexington on Thursday at 4 p.m.

“Our competition is going to step up next week and the following week,” Bohannon said. “Hopefully we can take care of the teams that have been making noise lately and step up ourselves.”
