Lady Hornets do it again, win 2-1

Tatum drives in pair of runs in sixth; Smith pitches second straight complete game

They did it again. The Lady Hornets scored two runs in the sixth inning and made those runs stand up in a 2-1 varsity softball victory over Waller on Thursday.

A day after upsetting 10th-ranked Montgomery by the same score, Huntsville pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the sixth at Waller. Hayley Tatum’s two-out double scored both Sara Vaughn and Jessica Beardsley to give the Lady Hornets a 2-0 lead.

Waller scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on third base when Huntsville pitcher Shelby Smith struck out the game’s final hitter looking. She did that after Huntsville catcher Nena Gibson was injured in a collision at the plate in which Waller scored its only run.

Smith gave up only three hits and two walks in a complete-game win. On Wednesday, Smith pitched a four-hitter and picked up a win against Montgomery.

Huntsville, which lost to Brenham earlier this week, improved to 2-1 in District 18-4A play and 8-9 overall. The Lady Hornets finish off a busy week tonight at 7 when they host Livingston at Kate Barr Ross Park. A junior varsity game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
