Mustangs expect fight from lowly Goats

Trojans not looking past Cleveland to upcoming 22-3A showdown

By Jerry Coon

The Madisonville Mustangs travel to Groesbeck tonight to take on the Goats in a District 19-3A showdown.

Groesbeck (1-7 overall, 0-3 in district) is looking to repeat last year’s performance against the Mustangs, when the Goats won 40-27 in Madisonville.

“Groesbeck has a tremendous defense,” Madisonville coach Greg Morgan said. “They have just been struggling on the offensive end with scoring. They have been able to move the ball, but they can’t get into the end zone.”

Madisonville (7-1 overall, 3-0 district) is coming off a 66-31 victory over the Palestine Wildcats and enter tonight on a six-game winning streak. With a win tonight, the Mustangs can lock up at least a share of the 19-3A championship.

Even though Groesbeck has yet to win a district game, the Mustangs could struggle with the Goats running game.

“They get better and better each week,” Morgan said. “The thing that concerns me isn’t their speed. It is the way they pound the ball down the field. We are going to have to change things up defensively and adjust to it.”

Trojans looking to make it four district wins in a row

The Coldspring Trojans look to continue their District 22-3A title push this week when they host the Cleveland Indians, a team that has been outscored 256-111 thus far this season.

Coldspring (5-3 overall, 3-0 in district) has reeled off three consecutive district wins since suffering a 54-30 loss to Navasota on Oct. 5. The Trojans are trying to avoid looking past the Indians (2-6, 2-1) to a Nov. 9 showdown in Splendora (5-3, 3-0). The Wildcats are also undefeated in district and travel to Shepherd (1-7, 1-2) tonight.

Tonight’s game in Coldspring will kick off at 7:30.
