New Waverly sprinter qualifies for State Games of Texas

Estes to compete in three events at biennial meet in Waco next month

LOS ANGELES — The high school track and field season culminated at Mike Myers Stadium in Austin in May at the UIL State Track and Field Championships. For many runners, that doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s an offseason, especially for New Waverly’s Cameron Estes.

Estes achieved as much as he possibly could as a freshman for New Waverly this past year, helping the 400, 800- and 1,600-meter relay teams win gold medals at the state track meet this past spring.

Still looking to improve, Estes has been competing in meets all summer.

Earlier this month, Estes competed at the Texas Athletic Amateur Federation’s track and field regional meet in Temple. Estes won a gold and a silver medal in the 400-meter run (53.13 seconds) and the long jump (20 feet, 1 inch). He also claimed two bronze medals in the 200-meter run (23.59) and the 800-meter run (2:16).

Finishing in the top three in each event qualified Estes for the State Games of Texas. Estes, however, will only compete in the 200, 400 and long jump.

The State Games will be held in Waco from Aug. 5 through Aug. 8.
