HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston State senior Morgan Mikulin has been named the Southland Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the week by vote of the league’s sports information directors, the league office announced Monday. Mikulin gives Sam Houston its first two awards of the season and is the first player to sweep the weekly honors this season.
A native of Huntsville, Mikulin was as dominant on the mound as she was at the plate as she led the Bearkats to a 5-0 record last week.
Mikulin hit a team-leading .429 average, had six hits, including three doubles and drove in three RBIs. In the pitching circle, she recorded a perfect 5-0 record with a 1.72 earned run average and had 15 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings.
Sam Houston State won both games of its doubleheader against Monmouth early last week before sweeping Texas-San Antonio on Saturday and Sunday.
This week’s hitter honorable mentions are Central Arkansas junior Shayleen Ristau, UT-Arlington senior Heather Fortenberry and Texas State junior Jenna Emery.
Pitching honorable mentions are Texas A&M-Corpus Christi senior Margo Hurdt and Texas State freshman Anne Marie Taylor.
To receive an honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland softball sports information directors.
