SHSU softball team sweeps doubleheader against UTSA

HUNTSVILLE — Morgan Mikulin picked up both victories in the pitching circle and went 4-for-7 at the plate to pace Sam Houston State as the Bearkats swept a Southland Conference softball doubleheader from UTSA on Saturday.

Sam Houston won 2-1 and 5-4 for the Bearkats’ first conference victories of the season. The victories also extended SHSU’s current winning streak to four games. Sam Houston stands 8-14 for the year and 2-6 in Southland action.

Shelbi Tucker started the day on a strong note with a solo home run in the first inning of the opening game. UTSA tied the contest with an unearned run scored on an error in the fifth inning.

Amy Brown’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh provided the winning score.

Tomi Garrison started and pitched five innings.  Mikulin threw the final two innings to pick up the victory.

As the starter in the circle in the nightcap, Mikulin struck out six Roadrunners and spread out five hits to up her season record to 5-6.

At the plate, Mikulin helped spark a five-run first inning with a two-run double. Mandy Gegan followed with another two-run two-bagger. UTSA scored two runs in the fourth inning and another pair in the sixth, but the Kats hung on for the win.

Sam Houston State and UTSA will meet in the third and final game of the weekend series today at 1 p.m. at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
