HUNTSVILLE — On the same track that the Hornets and the Lady Hornets hope to have success in May for the Region III meet, the Huntsville track and field team had another strong showing.
The Lady Hornets finished in second place behind Klein Forest in the York Relays on Saturday at Bowers Stadium as the Hornets took 11th place.
“Hopefully, each week our meets get a little bit tougher and we’ll see a little bit tougher competition,” Huntsville head coach Jason Elliott said. “This is probably the best competition we’ve seen in a long time. You have 27 girls teams and 27 boys teams.
“For our girls to finish second overall right behind one of the top (Class) 5A teams in the region in Klein Forest, that says a lot about our team and where we’re going.”
The team of Jamie Brown, Kaylynne Wright, Shan Moring and Jasmine Williams finished in first place in both the 4-by-100-meter (49.49 seconds) and 4-by-200-meter relay (1:43.26). RaKira Turner threw the discus 125 feet, 4 inches for a first-place finish.
In the 400-meter dash, Moring and Brianna McCall both placed with second- and third-place finishes.
RaKendra Turner finished in second place the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.7 seconds.
Wright and RaKira Turner finished in second place in the long jump (16-5 1/2) and the shot put (37-5), respectively. Kristine Hanks finished in fourth place in shot put with a throw of 34-3.
Wright and McCall placed fourth in the 200-meter dash (26.39) and the 800-meter run (2:28.75), respectively.
RaNina Turner placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.72.
Jimmie Brummett finished in fifth place in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:34.52 and sixth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:00.66.
“Our boys finished in 11th place, but I’m satisfied with the way they came out, did the things we asked them and competed,” Elliott said.
Henry Ford and Dimitri Collier finished in second and third place in the 100 dash, respectively.
The relay team of Collier, Cameron Simmons, Darius Evans and Ford placed third in the 4-by-100 with a time of 43.31 and fifth in the 4-by-200 in 1:31.55.
Broderick Hadnot finished in sixth place in the shotput (44-9) and the discus throw (134-1).
“For the most part, we’re excited about what our kids did Saturday,” Elliott said. “We had some tough competition and we were pleased with how our kids competed. Of course we’ve got a long way to go before district and then regionals.”
The Hornets and Lady Hornets head to Angleton for a meet Friday.
“It’s probably going to be another big meet,” Elliott said. “Some of the best teams like Texas City in that area are going to be there. Of course Angleton’s always one of the top teams in the state. There’s going some of the Beaumont schools like Brazoswood and Brazosport.
“To be the best, you have to compete against the best. We want our kids to be peaking at the right time. I think these meets will help us do that.”

Alive and kicking: Bearkats still in hunt at SLC baseball tourney
With the possibility of going home early from the Southland Conference Tournament and a chance of their season coming to an abrupt end, the Bearkats needed some quality starting pitching and production from their bats in the worst way.
Like he has done all year long, Sam Houston senior Justin Jackson delivered a lights-out performance on the mound and the offense made the kind of impact the Bearkats have been looking for Thursday morning.
Both elements came together at the exact right time as the Kats stayed alive in the tourney with a 7-1 victory over McNeese State in an elimination game at Bobcat Ballpark. -
Bad day for Bearkats
The Bearkats’ road to the NCAA tournament just got a little bit tougher.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi broke out for four runs before top-seeded Sam Houston even stepped to the plate Wednesday afternoon, but the Kats couldn’t find a way to counter that first punch.
Sam Houston connected for eight hits, but could not get enough of those in a row to make a dent in the deficit and are now one loss away from being eliminated from the Southland Conference tournament following a 9-2 loss at the hands of the eighth-seeded Islanders on Wednesday afternoon at the Bobcat Baseball Ballpark. -

Tough night for Kats against Rice
The Bearkats had a golden opportunity to make a lasting impression for a potential at-large bid in the NCAA tournament with fifth-ranked Rice coming to town. Sam Houston’s bats couldn’t get going early enough or be able to link enough hits together against the Owls pitching staff and succumbed to a 5-0 loss in the final game of the season at Don Sanders Stadium on Tuesday night.
