HUNTSVILLE —
Nearly a year to the day, the Hornets squared off against longtime rival Brenham in the bi-district round of the playoffs.
Looking at where both teams stand before tonight’s matchup, Huntsville head coach Larry Carlson knows that this game won’t have the same type of ebb and flow as it did last year.
“We’re two different teams than we were a year ago. We graduated a lot of kids, them and us. It’ll definitely be a different style of play,” the coach said of tonight’s bi-district playoff game, which will tip off at Rudder High School in Bryan at 7 p.m.
“I like our chances against Brenham. We just need to do what we need to do. I feel we’re as good as Brenham.”
For a while now, the Hornets have known that they were most likely headed back to the playoffs.
The question at hand was who would Huntsville square off against.
Well, the Hornets got a real good look at the Cubs last Friday at Brenham’s 72-65 District 17-4A first-place tiebreaker victory over Magnolia.
“They’re real athletic. They play fast-paced,” Carlson said.
While the Hornets may not be the same team they were last year when they defeated Brenham 61-52 in the first round of the playoffs, Carlson admitted that his squad isn’t even the same one as it was a month ago.
On the verge of missing the playoffs, the Hornets regrouped as the regular season was winding down and won four of their last five district games.
“Our confidence is up,” the coach said. “Now we’re believing that we can be good and we’re finding out that we are pretty good. I’m extremely proud of the kids the way they fought in the second half of district. They all give me every ounce of effort. There’s no pulling back with those guys.
“You always want to be peaking right time and we’re playing our best ball of the year right now.”
Today’s bi-district playoff game is set to begin at 7 p.m. at Rudder High School in Bryan.
