RODEO INSIDER: Busy week in the baby department

Ty Murray and Jewel welcome home 7-pound-6-ounce boy

STEPHENVILLE — Ty Murray is a father.

The seven-time world all-around rodeo champion, and his singing star wife, Jewel, have welcomed a son, Kase Townes Murray. The 7-pound-6-ounce boy was born at 7 p.m. CDT on Monday.

On her website, JewelJK.com, the four-time Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter said, “Ty and I are so pleased to welcome our new baby boy Kase Townes Murray into the world! We are overcome with happiness — it really is as great as everyone told us it would be — better even!”

Murray, 41, lives with Jewel, 37, on a Stephenville ranch. The couple was married in the Bahamas in 2008. Kase Townes is their first child.

Jewel currently serves as a host and judge on the new Bravo series, “Platinum Hit.” In August, she’s scheduled to release a children’s themed album of original music entitled “The Merry Goes ’Round.”

Meanwhile, Murray, who won his seventh Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association all-around title in 1998, stays busy at their working Texas ranch and with helping the Professional Bull Riders. He is a PBR co-founder who avidly campaigns to advance the sport.

An unforgettable week

And speaking of newborns, last week was very memorable for veteran team roper Martin Lucero.

It began on July 5, when his wife, Jodee, gave birth to their second daughter, Marlee Grae, at a Fort Worth hospital.

It ended on Saturday when he and his team roping partner, Luke Brown, won the $3,678 team roping title at the Dinosaur Roundup in Vernal, Utah, according to the PRCA.

The win helped Lucero, a Stephenville cowboy, move up one place to 13th in the weekly posted PRCA heeling world standings with regular season earnings of $34,857.

Brown, who also lives in Stephenville, is ranked 13th in the heading title race with $34,857.

Last year, Brown and Lucero won the average at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, meaning they finished with the best aggregate time after making 10 runs.

A great honor

Longtime trick rider/roper J.W. Stoker of Weatherford will be inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy on Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Other members of the 2011 class are the Deadwood (S.D.) Days of '76 rodeo committee, the late three-time world champion cowboy Burel Mulkey, two-time world champion bareback rider Lan LaJeunesse, PRCA board chairman and longtime San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo chief executive officer Keith Martin. Also headed to the hall is the late three-time PRCA Bucking Horse of the Year War Paint.

Cutting horse update

In the world of thoroughbred horse racing, the Triple Crown Series is completed within a five-week span.

It begins with the Kentucky Derby. Fourteen days later, there's the Preakness Stakes. Then, the Belmont Stakes comes after 21 days.

But in the National Cutting Horse Association, there's a seven-month gap between the sport's first and third jewels. The Futurity, which is the first jewel, is in December. The Super Stakes runs in April and the Summer Spectacular Derby campaign is in July. All three jewels are in Fort Worth.

The 2011 Summer Spectacular kicked off with the 5- and 6-year-old open division first round on Tuesday. It concludes on July 30 with the 4-year-old open finals, which is the third jewel of the Triple Crown.

A stallion named One Time Royalty and rider Lloyd Cox won the $250,000 December Futurity. A mare named Olenasfeatherdually and Darren Simpkins finished No. 1 at the $100,000 April Super Stakes.

  • Alive and kicking: Bearkats still in hunt at SLC baseball tourney

With the possibility of going home early from the Southland Conference Tournament and a chance of their season coming to an abrupt end, the Bearkats needed some quality starting pitching and production from their bats in the worst way.
Like he has done all year long, Sam Houston senior Justin Jackson delivered a lights-out performance on the mound and the offense made the kind of impact the Bearkats have been looking for Thursday morning.
Both elements came together at the exact right time as the Kats stayed alive in the tourney with a 7-1 victory over McNeese State in an elimination game at Bobcat Ballpark.

  • Bad day for Bearkats

The Bearkats’ road to the NCAA tournament just got a little bit tougher.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi broke out for four runs before top-seeded Sam Houston even stepped to the plate Wednesday afternoon, but the Kats couldn’t find a way to counter that first punch.
Sam Houston connected for eight hits, but could not get enough of those in a row to make a dent in the deficit and are now one loss away from being eliminated from the Southland Conference tournament following a 9-2 loss at the hands of the eighth-seeded Islanders on Wednesday afternoon at the Bobcat Baseball Ballpark.

The Bearkats had a golden opportunity to make a lasting impression for a potential at-large bid in the NCAA tournament with fifth-ranked Rice coming to town. Sam Houston’s bats couldn’t get going early enough or be able to link enough hits together against the Owls pitching staff and succumbed to a 5-0 loss in the final game of the season at Don Sanders Stadium on Tuesday night.

With four conference games left to play, all that kept Sam Houston from a Southland Conference regular season championship was just one win. Whether it was at Central Arkansas later in the week or in the Kats’ conference home finale on Sunday, just one victory would hand Sam Houston it’s first regular season conference title in 23 years. Relaxed and ready to pounce, Sam Houston jumped all over Southeastern Louisiana’s pitching staff early and relied on a strong starting pitching performance from senior Michael Oros. The Kats cruised to an 8-3 victory over the second-place Lions and the celebration was on.
