HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston exploded for eight runs in the first inning, then held off a determined UT-Arlington squad to win the rubber match of the opening-series of Southland Conference play Sunday afternoon.
Sam Houston (2-1 in SLC, 5-11 overall) totaled 15 hits as the Bearkats held on to beat the Mavericks 12-7.
Five Bearkats posted multiple-hit games as Braeden Riley and Taylor Davis each totaled three hits. Chris Andreas, Ryan Mooney and Jared Wondra produced two. Andreas had a solo home run in the second inning.
UT-Arlington (1-2, 5-10) scored its seven runs on 12 hits.
Trailing 12-5 through eight and a half innings, UTA pinch hitter Logan Bawcom hit a two-run home run to pull the Mavericks within five.
Brent Powers then struck out Chad Comer to end the game and picked up the save. Powers allowed only two hits and struck out two in the final three innings.
SHSU starting pitcher Paul Spinn (1-2) was the winning pitcher, going six innings and striking out four UTA batters.
Wondra totaled four RBIs and Andreas brought in three runs.
The Bearkats return to action Friday as they begin a three-game series against Texas State at Don Sanders Stadium.
