Some of you may remember the Charity Mile, a one-mile race down the Huntsville Christmas Parade route just before the start of the parade.
The race was held for several years back in the ’90s. Due to many requests, the Seven Hills Running Club is bringing it back as the Downhill Dash.
The race is open to runners and walkers. This will be a 1.23-mile race at 6 p.m. on Dec. 5. Start at the corner of Sam Houston Avenue and 20th Street, go north to the square and turn left on 11th Street and end at Highway 75 North. The course is mostly downhill and there will be a crowd along the way cheering you on.
The entry fee is $2, or $1 and a canned good for donation to the Good Shepherd Mission. No charge for children under 5 years of age. All participants will be issued a race number and finishers will receive a special finisher ribbon. The male and female winners will receive trophies and will be taken back to ride in a convertible in the parade.
Runners and walkers are encouraged to wear costumes. Trophies will be awarded to the top three in the costume contest.
Sign up in advance by mailing in an entry form. Entry forms can be picked up at Nautilus, Iron Works or 24 hours of day at the Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce. Race day registration will be available at the starting point at 5 p.m. on race day.

Running hills is actually good for you
Huntsville has plenty of hills. That can be good or bad, depending on your perspective. As runners, we complain about the hills and many of us try to avoid them when we are out on our training runs.
