James Everett Gilmore

Funeral services for James Everett Gilmore, 83, of Huntsville, are set for Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Huntsville with the Rev. Carroll Williams officiating and Dr. R. Dean Lewis, Dr. Bob Marks and Dr. Jim Gaertner delivering eulogies. Burial will follow at the Adickes addition of the Oakwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers include Dr. Mitchell Muehsam, Dr. Leory Ashorn, Dr. Ennis Hawkins, Mr. R.D. Hopper, Mr. Ralph Lawson and Mr. Billy Vandiver. Michael Hopper, Landon Hopper and Wade Hopper will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Dr. Gilmore was born April 7, 1926, in Port Arthur and passed away Nov. 8, 2009, in Huntsville. Dr. Gilmore graduated from Silsbee High School. He was drafted by the Army to serve in WWII. During his tour of duty he served in the Philippines. After he was honorably discharged, he entered Sam Houston State University and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1949 followed by a Master of Arts degree in 1957. He later earned a doctoral degree from University of Houston in 1968. He taught business courses at Buna High School from 1949 to 1956. Dr. Gilmore began teaching at Sam Houston State University in 1957. He was a Professor of Finance, Chair of the Department of General Business and Finance, Associate Dean of the College of Business Administration, Dean of the College of Business Administration, and Vice President of Academic Affairs. He retired from Sam Houston State University after 41 years of service with the honorary title of Dean and Professor Emeritus.

He was honored as a Sam Houston State University Distinguished Alumni in 1987 and initiated into the College of Business Hall of Honor in 2006. He served as secretary, treasurer, board member, president-elect and president of the Huntsville Rotary Club. Dr. Gilmore was also a life member and past president of the Texas Business Education Association.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Jo; daughters, Susan Gilmore Hopper and husband Wade Hopper of Kingwood, and Kathy Gilmore Gilcrease of Huntsville; and grandsons, Michael Hopper of Houston and Landon Hopper of Kingwood.

Dr. Gilmore was preceded in death by his parents, John H. and Ida Gilmore; and brother, Charlie Gilmore.

Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the endowment established in his honor by the SHSU College of Business Administration. Dr. Gilmore was a member of the First Baptist Church of Huntsville.
