Hazel Gray Wilson

HUNTSVILLE — Hazel Gray Wilson went to be with her Heavenly Father on Friday, July 23, 2010.  Hazel was born on Oct. 12, 1923, in Bogata, to Dallas and Nancy Gray, and was the fourth of seven children born to the couple.  

At the age of 18, Hazel met her soulmate, Richard Lee Wilson, while working at a cafe. After dating for six months, the couple married on May 16, 1942, in Houston. Together they had two daughters, and Hazel found her true calling as a wife and mother.

Hazel was preceded in death by her loving husband of nearly 60 years, Richard;  and three of her siblings, Thelma Lee Smith, J.R. Gray, and Harley Gray; and her son-in-law, Kenneth Sherrill. She was also preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Erma Robertson, and brothers-in-law, A.T. Wilson, Ivan Smith, Harold Jones, and Wendel Coleman.  

She is survived and was loved greatly by her daughters, Sharon Wilson Sherrill and Gail Wilson Kahle, and son-in-law, Warren Kahle. Hazel is also survived by her loving grandchildren, who cherished every moment they spent with her: Stacy Sherrill Bennett and husband Scott; John Sherrill and wife Kelly; Kathryn Kahle; Richard Kahle; David Kahle; and Michael Kahle. During her 86 years, Hazel became a great-grandmother to five boys: Brayden Bennett, Jadon Sherrill, Britton Bennett, Jack Sherrill and Kyle Sherrill. Hazel also leaves behind three sisters, Grace Jackson and husband Junior, Clela “Red” Jones, and Jackie Coleman; numerous nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-law, Doris Wilson and Gene Gray.

A visitation with the family will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, July 26, 2010, at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville. The funeral will be officiated by Kevin Hindmon at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home, with a graveside service to follow at McAdams Cemetery.
