NEW WAVERLY —
As the 2010 football season creeps closer, the Bulldogs are doing everything they can to make things difficult for opposing teams.
During this week’s practices, head coach M.K. Hamilton has started to apply his passing game influence to the Bulldogs’ offensive game plan, while still sticking to the ground attack.
“It kind of reminds me of Texas Tech’s offense; that’s what it seems like to me,” Bulldogs senior quarterback Micah Bohannon said following Wednesday’s practice. “We’re spreading it out a lot more to be able to get the ball to all of our athletes.”
After the New Waverly running backs — sophomore Glenn Hogle and seniors Kevin Major and Donnie Woods — ran the ball effectively against Woodville in last week’s scrimmage, Hamilton will be looking to see how well his team executes in a spread offense against Shepherd in tonight’s scrimmage, which starts at 6 at Bulldog Stadium.
“The way I look at it, it’s like a trial and error process,” Hamilton said Tuesday. “We run the football well. We also have the skill kids to throw the football. We have a pretty good quarterback in Micah Bohannon. We need to take advantage of that and spread the field, so we’re going to come out Thursday night and throw it around.”
Even though they’ve only started running plays out of the spread this week, the Bulldogs are starting to feel more and more confident they can run it effectively.
“We’ve taken to it pretty well. It’s going pretty well so far,” Bohannon said.
The senior quarterback says there’s a good reason he and his receivers have adjusted so quickly to the new offense.
“It is just like when I was a freshman,” Bohannon added. “This is basically my JV team. We were really close then, so now we’re even closer now after spending four years together.”
Looking to run a variety of plays, the Bulldogs are ready to see how their new offense works against an opposing defense.
“We’re going to go out there and we’re going to try out our new offense, obviously,” Bohannon said. “We’re going to see what works and then fine-tune our offense and defense and get everything going.”
After today’s scrimmage, Hamilton will begin breaking down how the Bulldogs executed in both the I-formation and the spread and start game planning for the season opener against Lovelady next week.
“My job as a coach is to come in here on Friday and compare both scrimmage films and what we did both times and game plan with what we’ve got,” the coach added. “We’ll take the best of both systems and get ready to go play.”
