Derrick Ross is trying like crazy for another shot at the NFL. He may get it if he continues the kind of work he’s turned in this year in San Angelo.
On Wednesday, the former star running back from Huntsville High School and Tarleton State was named Offensive Rookie of the Year in the Indoor Football League.
A rookie running back with the San Angelo Stampede Express, Ross rushed 164 times for 824 total yards. He averaged 58.9 yards a game and five yards per carry. Ross also rushed for 26 touchdowns this season, leading the Stampede Express to a 10-4 record and a spot in the IFL playoffs.
The first-year running back also contributed to his team’s passing game, making 11 catches for 64 yards and two TDs.
Ross played for a short time with the Kansas City Chiefs, but after leading the NFL Europa in rushing in 2007, the undrafted free agent was cut just before the Chiefs opened the season against the Texans in Houston.
