HUNTSVILLE — The Huntsville Public Library has been awarded a grant of $11,604 by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission through Lone Star Libraries, a program designed to give direct state aid to public libraries across Texas.

The library has received the grant from Lone Star Libraries regularly since the program was created by the Texas State Legislature in 2002.

According to City Librarian Linda Dodson, the library’s adherence to certain criteria set by the commission allows them to receive the grant annually.

In 2009 the grant was used to add new seating to the library, as well as to install shades on the windows at the rear of the building.

This year, Dodson said more than half of the funds will go into adding to the library collection, while the rest will be used to install a handicapped-accessible computer stand, a community announcements rack and a horizontal file cabinet for maps, among other improvements.

The grant will also provide a salary for a summer contract worker to aid in the library’s summer reading program.

“This grant has a tremendous impact on the community,” Dodson said. “Having help during the summer allows children’s coordinator Kim Mason the flexibility to present an outstanding summer reading program.

“The dollars going towards the collection help us to meet the wants and needs of the community, and the new furniture has helped us create a more inviting space for our customers.”

Dodson said that of the funding allocated for the collection, half will go to the adult collection, and half to the children’s collection, and will result in new books, DVDs and more for library patrons.

Lady Lions look tired, but still win in three sets
Maybe the Lady Lions were a little tired after winning the silver bracket at the Living Stones varsity volleyball tournament in Alvin over the weekend. But Alpha Omega Academy head coach Talara Cox felt her squad could have played a lot better Tuesday night.
Regardless, the Lady Lions took care of business, and despite a sluggish second game, cruised to a 25-15, 26-24, 25-16 victory over Northeast Christian Academy of Kingwood. Alpha Omega improved to 3-2 in district action with the win.

Kats come to life

Sam Houston State electrified the crowd with explosive plays in the passing and running games and the defense brought the heat as the Bearkats whipped the Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb 30-14 at Bowers Stadium.
