HUNTSVILLE —
For one day only, the Walker County Housing Authority will open its waiting list for low-income individuals and families who need assistance paying housing costs.
The waiting list for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, which has been closed since Aug. 6, 2008, will be open April 13, 2010, from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
“It used to be that the waiting list was opened up once a year,” Walker County Housing Authority Executive Director Mary Harrelson said. “But because of the economy, people have gotten so much more careful about remaining in the program, so I have not been able to open the waiting list until now.”
Starting on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, the housing authority will be handing out packets to anyone interested in applying for the waiting list on April 13, 2010.
These packets will contain all the information needed to complete the application on April 13. They must be picked up at the housing authority office at 340 Hwy. 75 North, Suite E in Huntsville.
“The people that fill out an application to get on the waiting list are called in one at a time,” Harrelson said. “At that time I verify and certify their information, if they qualify, and put their name on the waiting list.”
Applicants will be placed on the waiting list by date and time application is completed.
“Everyone is advised to dress comfortably according to weather conditions,” Harrelson said. “There will be a long line so please be patient. If you are in line, you will be seen.”
The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. For more information call (936) 291-3306.
