Workshop to teach art of fabric dyeing

HUNTSVILLE — The Wynne Home Arts Center will host Huntsville artist Tamara Chasteen for a series of open studio fabric dyeing sessions every Wednesday and Thursday in September from 2-5:30 p.m.

Chasteen will be on hand twice-weekly all month long to demonstrate fabric etching and dyeing techniques in the studio behind the Wynne Home, and the public is invited to observe and even participate.

The process Chasteen will be demonstrating throughout the open studio section involves chemically etching a piece of fabric by eating away layers, creating patterns, then submerging the fabric in dye to create contrast between the etched patterns and the remaining fabric.

Chasteen, who can often be seen performing workshops and demonstrations on fabric art at the Wynne Home, said she’s happy to simply be observed, but also encourages guests to create their own garment in the studio.

“They can make something if they want to. I have prices for all the scarves,” Chasteen said. “Or if they’re just curious about what I’m doing, that’s fine too.”

Chasteen also encouraged children and parents who participated in the Wynne Home’s summer classes to stop by during her sessions to pick up any finished works left behind when classes ended.

“I’m just going to be here doing my own thing, and people can come and see what I’m doing,” Chasteen said.
