HUNTSVILLE —
Huntsville fabric artist Tamara Chasteen will host a weekend batik fabric dyeing workshop Sept. 24-26 at the Wynne Home Arts Center.
The workshop will feature three days of intensive, hands-on learning of traditional batik techniques, including working with many of Chasteen’s own batik materials, as well as two complimentary meals.
The workshop is scheduled to be held Sept. 24 from 6-10 p.m., Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The full fee for the workshop is $150 plus a materials fee of $20-50 payable at the workshop. Discounts of $25 are available for Friends of the Wynne, SHSU students, HISD faculty and staff and those willing to devote later volunteer time to Chasteen’s projects, including the Sam Houston Folk Festival.
Batik is a traditional Indonesian fabric dyeing technique that involves stamping a piece of fabric with wax to protect it from dye, then dyeing the surrounding fabric surface to create overlaying colors. Chasteen will bring her personal collection of antique copper batik stamps to be used throughout the workshop.
“It’s a really rare opportunities to use these. They’re very hard to find,” Chasteen said. “If you have no batik experience whatsoever, the stamps really help.”
Fabric types used for batik are versatile, Chasteen said, but all fabrics must be lightweight. Fabrics may be brought by the student or purchased from the artist.
“It’s a great way to remedy old clothes,” Chasteen said.
Registration forms are available at the Wynne Home Arts Center. Payments for the workshop must be submitted to Chasteen no later than Sept. 19. Payments may be mailed to Chasteen at 175 Scott Road, Huntsville, TX, 77340. For more information, contact Chasteen at (936) 661-1779 or woollady@hotmail.com.
