HUNTSVILLE —
To remember all of the fallen heroes of Sept. 11 and all of the brave firefighters of Walker County, American Legion Sam Houston Post 95 will host a Sept. 11 Remembrance Day on Saturday at the Post, located at 1919 Industrial Dr. (off FM 2821) in Huntsville.
The day’s events begin at 9:30 a.m. with a Motorcycle Honor Ride, where participants will visit Walker County fire stations. Cost for the ride is $10 per rider and includes a brisket plate lunch after the ride.
“The American Legion Riders held a Wounded Warriors Ride about this time last year, where we rode to various locations and collected funds and items for wounded soldiers,” Post Second Vice Commander Pete Townsend said. “This year we decided to hold the ride in honor of our local law enforcement — police, firefighters and first responders.
“We will gather at 9:30 a.m. at the Post and take off at 10 a.m., driving by many of the counties fire stations,” he added. “It is just a way to honor their presence in the community.”
Following the ride, the Post will host a brief Remembrance Ceremony at 1 p.m., with guest speakers including Post Commander Allen Guillot, a Post 95 Ladies Auxiliary representative and others.
“We decided about a month ago to include a Remembrance Ceremony in the schedule,” Townsend said. “It won’t be anything fancy — just a time to honor our local heroes.”
Lunch will be offered after the ceremony at about 2 p.m., with hot dogs with all the trimmings available for $2, with a brisket plate lunch offered for $7 each. A pool tournament, with a $10 entry fee, will follow at 3 p.m.
All proceeds from the fundraising portion of the 9-11 Remembrance Day will benefit the American Legion Community Service Fund, which supports Boys State, local scholarships, Christmas baskets for needy veteran’s families and other services.
