Firefighters quickly control Friday fire

HUNTSVILLE — Another small wildfire broke out in Walker County on Friday, but this one was under control before any major damage was done.

Thursday night’s thunder storm brought lightning into the area, which caused the blaze on Dipping Vat Road of FM 1374 in New Waverly, and little rain. The Texas Forest Service brought two dozers and got help from the New Waverly Volunteer Fire Department to get the fire contained.

Butch Davis, the Walker County Emergency Operations Coordinator, said the damage was limited to just under seven acres Friday.

“We were able to get the fire on Dipping Vat Road contained,” Davis said. “There were rumors that a fire was also out at (Huntsville) State Park, but it was just the smoke coming from Dipping Vat Road.”

A fire was also reported on FM 2693 in southwest Walker County near Old Waverly on Thursday. The  New Waverly VFD, Texas Forest Service and Montgomery County Emergency Service District 1 contained the fire after it scorched seven acres.

Local emergency crews battled a 20-acre fire Thursday in northwest Walker County on Lost Indian Camp Road off FM 247. The blaze, which was caused when a tree fell on a powerline, burned down three structures at a deer camp.

The Texas Forest Service, along with the Pine Prairie and Riverside Volunteer Fire Departments and the Walker County Office of Emergency Management helped get that fire contained.

With an expected cold front moving into the area this weekend bringing high winds, emergency officials are going to be on high alert.

“We are going to be keeping an eye out because fires could break out with the wind knocking trees into powerlines,” Davis said. “We just want to remind people to get careful.”
