Third officer dismissed in TDCJ escape probe

By Matthew Jackson

A third Texas Department of Criminal Justice corrections officer was recommended for termination Wednesday as the investigation continues into the Nov. 30 escape of offender Arcade Comeaux Jr.

Cynthia M. Allen, 45, a corrections officer employed for 10 months with TDCJ, was recommended for termination from her position at the Estelle Unit in Walker County on charges of “establishing a relationship with an offender.”

Allen allegedly placed several phone calls to Comeaux’s ex-wife on his behalf, in violation of TDCJ policies and procedures.

According to a press release from TDCJ Director of Public Information Michelle Lyons, Allen admitted to placing the calls during the ongoing investigation into Comeaux’s escape by the TDCJ Office of the Inspector General.

Comeaux escaped from TDCJ custody during a transfer from the Estelle Unit to the Stiles Unit in Beaumont. While traveling in a TDCJ vehicle in the Conroe area, Comeaux produced a handgun and fired once, subdued officers in the vehicle, and ordered them to drive to the Baytown area, where he fled on foot. He was recaptured in Houston on Dec. 7.

Two additional TDCJ officers, including one Lieutenant, were dismissed as part of the investigation into the escape last week.
