Standlee announces county clerk candidacy



David Standlee, a graduate of Sam Houston State University, has announced his candidacy for the position of county clerk in the March 2010 primary.

Standlee received his Bachelor of Science degree in law enforcement and police science in 1974.

He is currently in his second term as a member of the Huntsville Independent School District Board of Trustees. He was HISD board president for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 school years.

Standlee retired from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice after 33 years as the director of executive services.

He began his career as a correctional officer at the Ellis Unit and soon promoted into the Research Department.

As the director of executive services, Standlee was responsible for leading staff in the development of agency policies, reporting statistics, records retention and many other projects.

Standlee was appointed to the State Employee Charitable Campaign Policy Committee by Gov. George W. Bush in 2001 and reappointed to the committee by Gov. Rick Perry in 2004 where he served until his retirement in 2008.

He also represented TDCJ on the Chamber of Commerce board as an ex-officio member from 1993–2008.

As a 35-year resident of Huntsville, Standlee continues to be involved in the local community. He is a past president of the Huntsville Rotary Club where he has participated in many local projects.

He is the district chairman of Rotary’s Nicaraguan Water Well project where 40 wells have recently been completed. He is currently president of the board for Safety Town Huntsville. Also, he is a deacon and Sunday School teacher at University Heights Baptist Church.

“It has been an honor and privilege for me to serve this community not only as an elected official but in so many ways,” Standlee said. “If elected, I will continue to always be available for the residents of Walker County.

“Filling the shoes of long-time public servant James Patton will not be easy, but I am confident with my management experiences at the state and local levels, the residents of Walker County will be provided a quality of service they will be proud of,” Standlee said.

“We are so dependent on automation in almost every aspect of our life, it is imperative that the Walker County Clerk’s Office be as efficient as possible to meet the needs of our fast pace society,” he said. “I will work closely with the county commissioners to ensure that the Walker County Clerk’s Office is given the tools necessary to perform their duties as efficiently as possible.”

Standlee and his wife, Cheryl, have two children, David and Carrie, and two grandchildren, Katelen and Kyle.
