Boys-Girls Club, Huntsville’s Promise set events for today



The Boys and Girls Club of Walker County and Huntsville’s Promise will hold events today.

The Boys and Girls Club will host the Houston Grand Opera from 4 to 5:30 p.m. to kick off Family FUN Week at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center at 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Huntsville’s Promise will host “Building a Healthy Community” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Wynne Home.

The Boys and Girls Club will feature performances by the grand opera “Opera to Go!” as well as a multicultural presentation of “How Nanita Learned to Make Flan.”

“How Nanita Learned to Make Flan” is a story about how the main character, Nanita, makes a pair of shoes that magically transports her far away from home.

With the help of an older woman and a parrot, Nanita is able to return home and learn the secret of making delicious flan.

The event is sponsored by Huntsville’s Target store and is open to the public.

Admission is one can good item to help kick off the club’s food drive to benefit the Good Shepherd Mission.

The drive continues through Nov. 20. Individuals are asked to bring can goods and non-perishable food items to either of the two Boys and Girls Club locations — the MLK Recreation Center or Scott Johnson Elementary.

Huntsville Promise’s come-and-go event will provide Huntsville residents with strategies for developing a healthy community as well as information about local non-profit organizations.

“We are excited,” said Meghan Sturrock, executive director of Huntsville’s Promise. “It’s a great opportunity for people to come together and share ideas about community needs — especially for the youth.”

Sturrock will join Dr. David Prier, chairman of Huntsville’s board of directors, for a short presentation on promoting healthy and successful youth.

Representatives from Huntsville YMCA and Walker County Boys and Girls Club will also be present to give poster talks and distribute literature.

They will demonstrate how their programs promote education, civic engagement, and success among young people.
