Sam Houston State University’s Bowers Stadium never looked more pink as over 160 participants gathered for the “Kats for the Cause/Pink Out” 5K run on Saturday morning.
Moms pushing children in strollers and seniors walking side-by-side joined students, all donned in pink, to support the common cause of fighting breast cancer.
The third annual 5K run was founded by SHSU’s Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity in order to create awareness in the community about the prevention, detection and treatment options for breast cancer among students and the community.
All proceeds from the event benefited the Breast Cancer Awareness and Education – ACS, Breast Cancer Network of Strength, the Komen Foundation and HOPE Foundations.
Last year’s event raised $4,500 to support awareness.
“Pink Out” continued at noon in Bearkat Alley outside Bowers Stadium before the Beakats took on University of Central Arkansas that afternoon.
Informative material was handed out, with those attending were encouraged to buy and wear pink T-shirts during the game.
Breast cancer survivors Carol Schmidt, Teresa Triplett, Sandra Brassard and Linda K. Malone, served as the honorary captains and were recognized both before the game and in a half-time ceremony.
Each of the individuals are connected to the university through a student or other means.
ZTA’s efforts to create breast cancer awareness began in 2007 with member and SHSU special event coordinator Bobby Jordan and Rosanne Keathley, Associate Professor of Health at SHSU and chairman of Kats for the Cause.
“My mother survived breast cancer and my good friend, Eileen Boaz, was also undergoing treatments in 2007,” Keathley said. “We want those attending to recognize the need to follow the American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Guidelines.
“Prevention is the key as well as early detection,” she continued. “We hope that participants will gain knowledge on self examinations and treatments of breast cancer.
“Over the past five or 10 years the guidelines have changed, and as women follow the rules, we see the survival rate increase.”
The “Pink Out” 5K run proved to be a successful way to unite the community with the common cause of defeating breast cancer.
“We want to develop attitudes of victory,” Keathley said.
Other sponsors of Saturday’s Pink Out events included Promoworld, KSAM, Sam Houston Cancer Center, Gateway Apartments, Schlotzsky’s, and student organizations such as Colleges against Cancer, Eta Sigma Gamma Health Science Honorary and more.
