H-GAC assistance due to Walker County homeowners, renters


The Houston-Galveston Area Council has launched a program designed to address unmet housing needs that arose from damage resulting from Hurricane Ike.

The H-GAC staff will be at the Walker County Storm Shelter, 455 State Highway 75 North in Huntsville, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 12 to take applications for the Ike Disaster Recovery Program.

The deadline to submit applications is Dec. 31.

Ike made landfall Sept. 13, 2009, hitting Houston and moved up Interstate 45 to Huntsville.

H-GAC received funding from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs for the two-year program.

Homeowners in five counties are eligible for assistance through the H-GAC program, including Walker, Austin, Brazoria, Matagorda and Waller. 

Eligible applicants may include low- to moderate-income homeowners or renters who lived in the home at the time of the hurricane.

The home must also have existing damage and be the primary residence of the homeowner or renter. Additional eligibility requirements may apply.
