Benefits set up for local radio personality

HUNTSVILLE — Doc Holiday, longtime radio personality for Huntsville's 101.7 KSAM, has been diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia.

Because of mounting medical bills, a benefit has been set up to help his family raise money for treatment at MD Anderson in Houston. KSAM will host a “Funding Docs for Doc,” benefit from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Walker County Fairgrounds. A barbecue meal with dessert will be served for $10 for adults and $5 for children.

The event will feature live music from the University Heights Baptist Church band and a silent auction. Donations will be accepted at the event.

“This diagnosis has caused an enormous financial toll on his family at this time and we are working with several entities in town on a benefit,” said Steve Everett, KSAM general manager. “For the last 15 years, Doc has helped us raise funds for many local causes and now we have the need to do it for him. It’s times like these you are proud to be in a very caring community.”

Everett said Holiday is like a member of the family and the entire staff will miss his presence in the studio.

“As you can imagine, it has taken an emotional toll on all of us,” Everett said. “Lots of Doc’s fans have been inquiring over the last few months and we are very disappointed that Doc will no longer be on-air here at KSAM.”

Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to help defray the costs of Holiday's medical care. A Docs for Doc account has been set up at the Walker County Federal Credit Union or donations can be emailed to dam1022@hotmail.com or to brooke@ksam1017.com.
