HUNTSVILLE —
A Pointblank man was arrested Saturday and charged with robbery after demanding money at Huntsville bank.
Carter James Mounger Jr., 49, was arrested shortly after 9:30 a.m. Saturday, and confessed to the attempted robbery of BBVA Compass Bank at 1410 Brazos Drive.
According to Lt. Jim Barnes of the Huntsville Police Department, Mounger entered the bank just before 9:30 a.m. and handed a teller a deposit slip that was left blank other than the words “need money.”
When the teller told Mounger he did not have an account at the bank, Mounger allegedly replied, “What if this is a stick up?”
He then confirmed to the teller than it was a stick up, and later recommended that the teller contact police.
Barnes said bank staff used both a panic button and a phone to contact police, who were quickly dispatched to the scene.
Officers from the HPD, the Walker County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety arrived at the bank within minutes.
Mounger was taken into custody and later confessed to the crime. Barnes said Mounger’s statements suggest he committed the offense “to make people take him seriously.”
“Ultimately it appears that this individual has some mental issues,” Barnes said. “He has been charged with robbery, which he did confess to.”
Barnes said that apart from a small pocket knife, Mounger had no weapons on his person at the time of his arrest. No money was taken from the bank.
