Woman injured in Highway 30 wreck

HUNTSVILLE — A Sam Houston State University staff member was seriously injured Friday morning when her car collided with another vehicle on her way to work.

Katherine McGilrey, who began working at SHSU as assistant marketing director for athletics on Wednesday, suffered a broken leg when her 2009 Volkswagen Jetta, traveling east on state Highway 30 near Westridge Drive, collided with a 2009 Hummer driven by 19-year-old Christopher Barrow.

According to Lt. Jim Barnes of the HPD, McGilrey was airlifted to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bryan shortly after the crash. Her injuries were not life-threatening, Barnes said.

SHSU News Service Director Bruce Erickson confirmed Friday afternoon that McGilrey was involved in the crash and that she had begun work with the university on Wednesday.

Investigating officers at the scene administered on-site sobriety tests to Barrow and determined that he was intoxicated. He was arrested and charged with intoxicated assault shortly after the crash.

Barnes said the accident occurred when Barrow failed to yield right of way when turning southbound onto Westridge Drive, when his vehicle collided with McGilrey’s.

Barrow suffered minor injuries in the crash.
