A motorist was arrested Monday night for driving while intoxicated after causing a four vehicle accident just of I-45 in Huntsville.
At 6:40 p.m. Huntsville police, in cooperation with Huntsville firefighters and EMS personnel, were dispatched to the 500 block of the I-45 on the west feeder road approximately 500 feet north of FM 1374 near Huntsville Memorial Hospital.
According to Sgt. Mike Legerski of the HPD, the accident was caused when a 2002 GMC Yukon exited I-45 at exit 114, heading south toward FM 1374.
Three vehicles were already stopped just past the exit ramp, apparently waiting at a traffic light.
The driver of the Yukon, identified as 48-year-old James Kreder, would later tell police that he did not see any cars ahead of him.
Upon entering the feeder road, Kreder’s vehicle collided with the rear end of a 1996 Jeep Cherokee, which in turn collided with the vehicle in front of it, which in turn collided with another vehicle.
“Basically he rear-ended the third vehicle, and that caused a kind of domino effect,” Legerski said.
As the other cars were forced forward by the impact, Kreder’s vehicle continued off the road and came to rest nearby.
All three drivers of the impacted vehicles were treated at the scene for minor injuries, but no one was transported to the hospital.
After investigation, it was determined that Kreder had been drinking. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and arrested.
The accident came just two days after another multiple vehicle accident apparently caused by a drunk driver, this one with no injuries.
Driving while intoxicated in the State of Texas carries several possible penalties, including a fine of up to $2,000, up to 180 days in jail and a license suspension for up to one year.
