Houston woman killed in interstate accident

By Kristin Edwards

A Houston woman was killed approximately two miles outside of Walker County Saturday night when she was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 45 in Montgomery County.

The woman, 45-year-old Deysi Zelaya, was in the process of removing her small child from the back seat of their disabled vehicle when a second vehicle impacted her and her vehicle.

Zelaya was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at 6:27 p.m.

According to the accident report, Zelaya’s vehicle was disabled in the right lane of traffic on the northbound freeway at approximately 6:18 p.m.

With the vehicle stopped, Zelaya had exited her vehicle and moved to its right side in an attempt to remove her child from the back seat.

At that point, two other vehicles were also traveling northbound in the right lane and saw the stalled vehicle.

While one of the oncoming vehicles moved into the left lane and did not impact Zelaya, the other vehicle attempted to move onto the right shoulder and struck both Zelaya and her vehicle.

Zelaya was killed on impact while the child received only minor injuries and was placed under medical care.
