Scouts bringing Thanksgiving help to those in need

The Cub Scouts of New Waverly gave several area families something to look forward to this Thanksgiving.

The scouts — approximately 14 boys in grades one through three — raised about $1,000 through fundraisers recently for Thanksgiving food packages.

The scouts put together four packages filled with stuffing, canned goods and other groceries Tuesday at the monthly pack meeting and will deliver them to the families tonight.

“It teaches them that there are people that are less fortunate then they are,” said Cub Master Tracey Hutchison about the activity. “It’s good for them to be able to give a hand in helping someone.”

Paula Haines, den leader for the first-grade Tigers, said this is the first year for the boys to pursue a project like this. She called it a big success.

Earlier in the fall, Haines said some of the scouts visited the Fire Station and participated in activities at the New Waverly Public Library.

Hutchison said participation has nearly doubled since last year, when there were only about six boys active within the group.
