In response to a recent Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co. beef recall, the Huntsville Independent School District recently identified four cases of the company’s ground beef products and prevented them from being integrated into school use.
No students were harmed because of the product, and the district is currently disposing of the product in accordance with USDA standards.
“When USDA issued a hold on this product, a physical inventory was immediately taken of all items containing ground beef,” said LeeAn Muns, HISD public information officer. “At this time, it was determined that HISD had four cases of this product, and this product was removed to our central warehouse until it was determined how the meat was to be disposed of.
“Currently, the meat is being disposed of in accordance with USDA guidelines.”
The recall applies to all ground beef products produced by Hallmark/Westland Packing Company delivered since Feb. 1.
The voluntary recall was executed after an ongoing USDA investigation revealed evidence that Hallmark/Westland had practices which were not compliant with Food Safety and Inspection Service regulations.
According to a FSIS representative, no illnesses have been reported as a result of the recalled meat, and the organization does not envision any illnesses resulting in the future.
In addition to the National School Lunch Program, products sent to the Emergency Food Assistance Program and the Food Assistance Program on Indian Reservations were also recalled.
