Concert to benefit Habitat for Humanity

The Walker County Habitat for Humanity will hold its annual benefit concert at 3 p.m. on Jan. 27 at First Baptist Church.

The concert will include performances by several choirs and soloists, and the funds raised will be spent on the construction of affordable housing.

“This is the 11th year we’ve held this concert, and it’s grown a lot since we started,” said William Powell, president of the Walker County Habitat for Humanity. “What we do at the concert is give a report on our accomplishments during the last 12 months as well as our goals for the future.

“The funds raised at the event will be used to assist in the procurement of property and to build a home for a needy family.”

Performers at the benefit concert will include the music department of First Baptist Church and the Huntsville Men’s Choir, Powell said.

“Soloists Dianne Meyers and Jo Ann Copeland will also be performing at the concert,” Powell said. “We’ll also have Rev. Keith Williams and his choir give a performance.”

Two owners of Habitat for Humanity homes will also be part of the program, Powell said.

“We will recognize two homeowners for having completed all payments on their homes,” he said. “We’re going to be ‘burning’ their mortgages at the concert.”

Powell said several individuals affiliated with Habitat for Humanity will be acknowledged at the concert.

“We honor people who have provided us with their service, their materials and their building assistance,” he said. “We also honor those who have donated their time, their furniture, their appliances and any other kind of help.

“We also recognize retired board members who have given their time and service to our mission of providing decent homes for those in need.”

Powell said the benefit concert’s attendance has grown substantially since the first event.

“Last year, we had over 1,000 people at our concert,” he said. “We almost filled up the University Heights Baptist Church auditorium.”
