Big crowd expected for Trash Bash

HUNTSVILLE — Walker County Proud Communities’ 14th annual Trash Bash will be held Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with five locations to drop off items.

In addition to Walker County Proud, the Trash Bash is also sponsored by the Trinity River Authority and the City of Huntsville.

Cindy Blaylock, president of Walker County Proud, said “we’ve got such pretty weather we are expecting a big crowd.”

Blaylock said it would also be helpful if residents separated metal from tires and the regular garbage.

“That would make unloading a lot quicker,” she said. “If you bring in any paint that is not usable, pop the lids and let it dry out or soak it up with sand or kitty litter or paper.

“That is so we don’t have that liquid in the city trucks going down the road and it’s better in the landfill when the paint is dried.”

Free trash bags are provided by county commissioners at the precinct barns.

Residents in Precincts 1, 2 and 3 should call the Walker County Courthouse at (936) 436-4912 before Saturday to get bags or volunteer to clean up roadsides and neighborhoods, and residents in Precinct 4 should phone (936) 344-6558.

Esther Herklotz, superintendent for the city’s Solid Waste Service, said disposal cost for 2009 totaled $5,522.79; waste intake was 196.68 tons; tires, 48 tons; appliances, 18 tons; garbage, 130.68 tons; and public and county vehicles, 508.

In 2008, disposal cost was $7,433.87; waste intake, 160.72 tons; tires, 48 tons; appliances, 24.07 tons; garbage, 88.65 tons; and public and county vehicles, 411.

• Huntsville Transfer Station, 590 IH 45 North — usable building material, appliances and furniture will be separated and recycled.

• T.J. Burdett Recyclers, 570 IH 45 North — aluminum cans, water heaters, steel cans, metal bedsprings, metal appliances, computer paper and cast iron.

• Huntsville Recycling Center, 590 IH 45 North — separate into clear and brown glass, steel and aluminum cans, cardboard, newspapers, plastic No. 1 and 2.

• Try2Recycle, 916 15th Street — Aluminum cans, water heaters, steel cans, metal bedsprings, metal appliances, computer paper and cast iron.

• New Waverly drop-off items at 9368 State Highway 75 South Precinct 4 barn.
