Artists, experts to teach Wynne classes

Registration open for 15 courses

HUNTSVILLE — The Wynne Home Arts Center is now accepting registrations for its Spring 2010 classes.

Fifteen classes ranging in subject from cooking to film to weaving will be offered by the arts center the spring, all taught by local artists and experts.

The Wynne Home is urging interested parties to register early, as most classes have limited space. To register or for more information, visit the Wynne Home at 1428 11th Street in Huntsville, call (936) 291-5424 or e-mail  wintern@huntsvilletx.gov.

The schedule of classes is as follows:

• Acrylic Collage, Tuesdays from March 23-April 20 from 4-5:30 p.m.

Ages: 10 and up. Class size limit: 10. Fee: $16

Instructor Besty Maloney will teach the basics of collage and guide students as they work to create their own acrylic collage pictures.

• Watercolor Portraits, Tuesdays from March 23-April 20 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Ages: 18 and up. Class size limit: 10. Fee: $20

Instructor Molly Campbell will first teach the basics of drawing, then guide students through the world of watercolor painting on their way to creating portraits.

• Painting with Acrylics, Tuesdays from March 23-April 20 from 1-3 p.m.

Ages: 18 and up. Class size limit: 9. Fee: $25

Instructor George Boone will teach the basics of color theory, color mixing and developing a strong composition, as well as how to use paint additives while working with acrylics. The class is suited both for beginning students and students simply looking to improve their acrylic skills.

• Beginning Clay Techniques, Tuesday from March 23-April 20 from 4-5:30 p.m.

Ages: 8-19. Class size limit: 10. Fee: $20

Instructor Tamara Chasteen will teach the basics of working with clay, including various techniques for hand building. Students will develop small-scale projects of their choice. Suggested projects include garden totems, birdhouses and bowls.

• The Best Films You’ve Never Seen, Wednesdays from March 24-April 14 beginning at 7 p.m. Ages: 18 and up. Class size limit: 30. No Fee.

Huntsville Item Film Critic Matthew Jackson will give his insight to five lesser-known films by some of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Films set to be screened include Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rope,” Billy Wilder’s “The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes,” Howard Hawks’ “El Dorado,” Martin Scorsese’s “The King of Comedy” and The Coen Brothers’ “Blood Simple.”

• Oil Painting, Wednesdays from March 24-April 21 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Ages: 15 and up. Class size limit: 8. Fee: $30

Instructor Lee Jamison will guide painters of any skill level through the techniques and theories behind oil painting. Brushes and paints will be provided. All individuals registering for the class should request a list of additional materials needed.

• Mommy and Me Intro to Art, Wednesdays from March 24-April 24 from 10-11 a.m.

Ages: 3-5. Class limit: five children and five parents. Fee: $20 per child and parent team.

Instructor Tonia Brown will work with parents and children to expose young children to art to help stimulate both visual awareness and hand-eye coordination. Parents and children will each create their own works of art.

• Photography, Wednesday from March 24-April 21 from 6-8 p.m.

Ages: 16 and up. Class size limit: 10. Fee: $15

Instructor Paul Olle will instruct students on methods to improve their photographic technique, including step-by-step guides to camera operation. All students must provide their own digital camera.

• Beginning Knitting, Wednesdays from March 24-April 21 from 4-5 p.m.

Ages: 10 and up. Class size limit: 10. Fee: $15

Instructor Tamara Chasteen will instruct students on the basics of knitting technique. The class is based more on practice and not individual projects.

• Indian Bead Weaving, March 25 or April 1 from 5:30-7 p.m.

Instructor Tamara Chasteen will teach this class free to children and adults ages 14 and up. The fee for the class is a promise by the student to volunteer at the Sam Houston Folk Festival April 30-May 2.

• Beginning Baskets, March 27 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Ages 8 and up (younger if accompanied by an adult). Class size limit: 10. Fee: $10

Instructor Tamara Chasteen will instruct students on how to weave their reed baskets. Simple weaving and twining techniques will be taught.

• Simple Suppers, Thursdays from April 1-April 22 from 6-7:30 p.m.

Ages: 13 and up. Class size limit: 8. Fee: $30.

Instructor Kim McAuliffe will instruct students, particularly young students, on basic meal preparation. Students will learn basic cooking techniques, as well as recipes ranging from Italian to Asian. Student should bring aprons.

• Introduction to Ceramics, Sundays from April 11-May 2 from 5-8 p.m.

Ages: high school and up. Class size limit: 6. Fee: $25.

Instructor Galen Wiese will teach the basics of ceramics. The class is geared toward students of all experience levels.

• Card Weaving¸ April 17 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Ages: 12 and up (younger if accompanied by an adult). Class size limit: 8. Fee: $10

Instructor Tamara Chasteen will instruct students in the ancient art of card-weaving, used to create decorative straps or belts. Students will learn the process of setting up the weave, then take prepared looms home to complete their projects.
