HUNTSVILLE — Today is the last day to register to vote in the April 13 Republican primary runoff election at the Walker County Annex, 1301 Sam Houston Ave.
Walker County residents can register in the Voter Registation Office at the annex from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to where the registration card is postmarked or has to be in the office.
David Standlee and Kari French seek the GOP nomination for county clerk, while Susan McGilberry Embry and Mark Holt will meet for the Precinct 3 justice of the peace spot.
The two winners advance to the general election Nov. 2 to face opposition on the Democratic ballot.
Registered voters who cast ballots in the Republican primary election March 2 are eligible to vote in the runoff along with voters who did not vote in either the GOP or Democratic primary.
Voters who cast ballots in the Democratic primary cannot vote in the GOP runoff.
The last day to apply for a ballot by mail (received, not postmarked) is April 6.
April 2 is the last day for a ballot to be mailed out or pick up a ballot by mail application in the elections office at the county annex.
The first day of early voting in the runoffs is April 5 at the county annex on Sam Houston Avenue, while April 9 is the last day of early voting.
The three-way contested race for county clerk March 2 was extremely close with Standlee and French winning out over Ruth White Bond.
Standlee received 1,794 or 34.92 percent of the votes while French received 1,712 or 33.33 percent. Bond followed with 1,631 or 31.75 percent of the vote.
For the Precinct 3 JP position, Holt received 382 or 40.04 percent of the vote while Embry received 292 or 30.61 percent.
The Standlee-French winner faces Democrat Paula Turner in November. The Holt-Embry winner goes against Democrat Denisa Loveday.
Turner was unopposed March 2 while Loveday defeated Glenn Peck 269-160.
With 18 of 18 precincts counted, 4,479 voters cast ballots March 2 at 13 polling locations in the county.
Overall, 7,007 ballots were cast for a voter turnout of 23.74 percent, including 5,537 Republican votes and 1,470 Democratic votes.
