HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston State University Department of Jazz Studies will host the 50th annual Sam Houston State University Jazz Festival this Wednesday and Thursday in the SHSU Lowman Student Center.
The festival will feature performances from each of SHSU’s jazz bands, as well as performances from nine middle and school and high school bands from around the state.
The bands entered in the festival will compete for a variety of prizes, both for outstanding bands and individual musicians, and will receive critiques from guest judges and SHSU faculty members.
The festival will kick-off Wednesday evening with a jam session performance featuring guest saxophonist James Riggs and the SHSU Faculty Jazz Combo at the Stardust Room at 8 p.m. Admission for the performance is $10, $5 for SHSU students that present their student ID.
Beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday the various bands registered for the festival will begin their performances in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom on campus.
A new performance will being every half hour, and each band will be critiqued by guest judges James Riggs, Bob Morgan and Greg Waits.
From 1:15-2:15 p.m. guest artist Ed Soph, a well-known jazz drummer and faculty member at the University of North Texas, will present a Jazz Drum set clinic to students.
The clinic will be followed by the remainder of band performances. All day time performances are free and open to the public.
The festival will conclude with a concert by Soph and the SHSU Jazz Ensemble Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. in the LSC Ball Room.
Admission for the concert is $10, $5 for seniors and SHSU students, and free for children six and under. At the conclusion of the concert, awards will be giving to the outstanding bands of the day.
