HUNTSVILLE —
A late afternoon wreck on Wednesday sent one man to the hospital.
The man, who has not been identified, was transported to Huntsville Memorial Hospital with what officials called, “non life-threatening injuries.” The man was driving a Toyota Echo when he was struck by a Nissan Altima driven by Lonnie Dennis, 82, of North Carolina, according to Thomas Dawson, senior officer with the Huntsville Police Department.
Dennis was ticketed for failure to yield at a stop sign. The Nissan he was driving was a rental car.
“The Nissan was on Southwood crossing over to I-45 and the Toyota was exiting to go north on Highway 19,” Dawson said. “The Nissan failed to yield resulting in the collision.”
Dawson said Dennis was heading to Austin, but got turned around when he exited the interstate.
“He was trying to get back on the interstate, but didn't quite make it,” Dawson said. “That's not a very good intersection to begin with.”
The accident happened just after 4:30 p.m., backing up traffic coming off in Interstate 45 for a half hour.
