HUNTSVILLE —
The Wynne Home Arts Center is offering a unique opportunity for residents this month — two chances to learn firsthand how to integrate a variety of herbs into a specially prepared lunch.
During two sessions to be held on July 23 and July 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., members of the Texas Thyme Unit of the Herb Society of America will prepare a meal utilizing herbs found in the garden behind the Wynne Home. For a $15 admission, as many as 16 adults per session will learn how to use those herbs to liven up their meals.
“Our intention is to use original recipes including basil, mint, oregano, rosemary, sage and other herbs and spices to prepare a chicken salad that people don’t ordinarily get to eat,” said Jean Marsh, Texas Thyme Unit Chair. “We’ll also help people make herb butters using lemon thyme and lemon balm which they’ll take home.
“We want to help people learn how to use herbs in their own landscapes without necessarily having an herb garden, and to become familiar with the notion that they could just walk outside, choose their own herbs, and use them in their meals. So many of (these herbs) are packed full of Vitamin C and all kinds of nutrients, so there’s a lot of healthy things you can get from them.”
According to Samantha Patterson, a Wynne Home summer intern, the events will provide a rare chance to learn more about a variety of herbs and enjoy a delicious meal.
“”In addition to the meal, will also go on a tour of the herb gardens and see an informational power point presentation, so the sessions are really well-rounded. Class size is limited to 16 members, and we are requiring the sessions to include adults only, so sign up today.”
Sessions will be held in the Wynne Home meeting room. For more information, call Patterson at (936) 291-5424.
