Huntsville’s Promise will host the second annual Empty Bowls Soup Luncheon at the Wynne Home Arts Center Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This year’s luncheon, which raises hunger relief awareness and funds for local food banks, will also focus on raising funds for relief efforts in Haiti after a massive earthquake struck the Caribbean island in January.
All proceeds from the event will go to Haiti relief via the International Rescue Committee, as well as Good Shepherd Mission and food banks in Riverside and New Waverly.
Donors will have the option of selecting which charity or charities they would like their donation to go to. All unspecified donations will be divided evenly among the four charities.
Soup will be served at the event by Huntsville High School culinary arts students, and for each donation received, guests will be able to select a handmade bowl from a large collection amassed by local students, volunteers and members of the Walker County Senior Center.
“Hunger is a significant issue for the youth in Huntsville,” Chasteen said. “They independently come up with ideas for canned food drives, and they clearly recognize it’s a big issue. So they have enthusiastically jumped on board for this project.”
Chasteen enlisted the help of several HISD art and culinary arts teachers and their classes to make the bowls, along with volunteers in the Wynne Home ceramics studio and Walker County Senior Center members.
The bowls will each be assigned a price range, and visitors will be allowed to choose a bowl based on the level of their donation, beginning with a minimum suggested donation of $10, Chasteen said.
There will also be a silent auction to sell many of the more elaborate bowls in the collection.
