HUNTSVILLE —
Close to a dozen Sam Houston State University students gathered in center of campus to protest a recently proposed social media policy.
If implemented, the policy would give the SHSU Marketing and Communications Department authorization to remove or edit the content of any user who is a part of the university’s social universe.
According to the policy, all groups who use the trademarked "SHSU" or "Sam Houston State University" must join the Social Universe, or remove the trademark
In order to be a part of this social universe, students and faculty must apply or request to be admitted.
The language of the policy states that the university can remove posts considered offensive or damaging to the image of the university, however, can do so with no defense of that action.
Protesters on Wednesday chanted, "Censorship, f*** that" and "Ain't no power like the power of the people cause the power of the people don't stop."
Today, the SHSU Lovers of Liberty, Young Democratic-Socialists, Bearkat Democrats and College Republicans is holding an additional protests in the mall area with a "censored free speech wall."
“They want to come in and delete everything without offering any sort of explanation,” said Morgan Freeman of Lovers of Liberty. “We’re just worried about the potential abuse that could happen from that.”
Kris Ruiz, associate vice-president of Marketing and Communications, is the organizer of the policy and says she has not received input from any students regarding the policy.
“It’s just a draft,” Ruiz said. “Being a part of the social universe is totally voluntarily. It’s totally opt-in.”
Aside from the “censorship wall” protest, Ruiz will address the SHSU Faculty Senate today to receive feedback regarding the policy.
