AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry’s homeland security czar has been appointed the new director of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The Texas Public Safety Commission offered Steve McCraw the top job in Texas law enforcement on Friday. A statement issued by the DPS says the offer is contingent on a pending background check.
The job carries with it the title of colonel. He would succeed Col. Stanley E. Clark, who resigned May 4 amid sexual harassment allegations.
Col. Lamar Beckworth has been serving as DPS director on an interim basis since then.
In a statement issued Friday, Perry praised McCraw’s devotion to duty that he says dates to his days as a DPS trooper in Canyon and continued through his rise through the FBI ranks.
